Hi, Dr Li , Do you work in Cedars?

-I work in CSMC (Cedars-Sinai Medical Center) as an on-call Acupuncture physician. I also have my own TCM practice: one located in Henry Mayo Hospital and another one in Encino next to West Valley Medical Center

What is TCM?

-TCM stand for Traditional Chinese Medicine. TCM includes Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs, Cupping, Maxabustion, ect

What does Acupuncture do? How does acupuncture work? What is Qi?

-By inserting fine , sterile needle at a specific point to break up blockage that hamper the smooth flow of Qi so Qi can travel freely through the body.

-Qi  is en energy flow through meridian. Qi regulates movement of blood, Blood is responsible for delivering oxygen and nutrients to each organ and cells and also carries away metabolic debris & waste.

-Meridian is invisible energy pathway in our body. It connects acupuncture  points and corresponding internal organ. It contains life-force energy qi around all part of our body.

-Acupuncture restore energy balance and proper energy flow to meridian

Does Acupuncture cause pain? Any side effects?

-No pain at all. Acupuncture needle is fine and very thin, it is like our hair thin, compare to blood-draw needle. Acupuncture has no side effects.  It uses disposal needle, very safe and low cost is a big plus.

What conditions does acupuncture treat?

-Pain control are well known, All kind of pain: migraine, headache, TMJ, neck pain , shoulder pain, arm pain, hands pain, carpal tunal, back pain, hip pain, leg pain, knee and ankle pain, foot pain, arthritis,

-Stroke( WHO), Bell’s palsy, MS

-Women’s problem;  infertility, fertility, pregnancy’ complication such as vomiting, nausea, menstrual pain or cramping, irregular menstruation, no periods, fibroid, menopause syndrome like hot flashes, night sweating, insomnia

-Eye diseases such as retina pigmentosa, age related macular degeneration, eye floating and all the non-surgery eye diseases.

-Respiratory system: chronic coughing. Sinusitis :1 or 2 treatments can make it gone.

-Circulation: hypertension, palpitation.

-Endocrine:  hyperthyroid, hypothyroid, anxiety, depression, insomnia

-Digestive system: IBS, sibo-IBS, diarrhea, constipation, GERD

-Others such as: allergy, motion sickness, weight control

-Almost everything. Of course, with herbs together

Does herb have side effects? When do we need use herbs?

-Herb does not have side effects. Herbs are nature made from leaves, trees, roots. For example:

Ginger, green onion, red dates, seed of peach are often used in herb formula. Are they poisoning,  of course not.

-Chinese Medicine practitioner will chose right  herbs for your special case. There are many forms of herb such as  pills, tea, tables, capsules, for local use: oil, cream, patches. It could be sing herb, or formula.

-Remember sometimes herbs are more important than acupuncture.

Are herb and acupuncture covered by Insurance?

-Landmark covers herbs , other insurance does not cover herbs. However more and more insurance cover acupuncture.

What does cupping do?

-Cupping is a complimentary treatment with acupuncture for pain relieve, remove Qi blockage and blood stagnation, detoxification, improve circulation when used for numbness

Can you treat children? Asthma?

-We do treat children. Acupuncture has been employed as an effective health care modality for 3000 years. Western medicine enter in China for only 100 yeas. Before that TCM treated every one including children and new born baby.

Does acupuncture treat urgent cases?

-Acupuncture does treat urgent cases such as high blood pressure, acupuncture can make blood pressure down from 180 / 110 mmgh to 150/ 90 even to normal in 30 min

-High Fever is quite effective with acupuncture 39 to 37.8 in 30 min

-Tooth ache: immediately relieve your pain

-Injury  pain causes swelling on muscle or joint

Do you do cosmetic and weight control?

-Acupuncture is popular for wrinkles and face lifting. Our weight control program are very effective, 1 patient lost 7 lb in 1 st week, and 20 lb in 2 months, another patient lost 35 lb in 3 months

Do you refer your patients to western Medical Doctors?

-Western Medicine is important. Many patients were suggested by MDs to go for acupuncture. If patients come to our office, we always urge our patients to see their MDs for annual check up and special visit to MDs.

-For cancer patients, acupuncture is an supportive treatment for side effects. It is an alternative and adjunctive treatment in hospitals and medical center.

-Western and eastern medicine combined will give patient best outcome.
